1. What if Wentz is injured or Hurts wins the Philadelphia Eagles’ backup quarterback role?

One of the common misconceptions of Hurts’ selection is that Philly spent a second-round draft choice on a backup quarterback. That isn’t true. As mentioned, when camp does begin officially, Hurts will be the third man on the depth chart. Philly has $2 million invested in Nate Sudfeld, and he’s the man they expect to step in if Carson Wentz goes down.

Though it can seem like Wentz’s injury history is one of the most overstated narratives in the NFL, people don’t bring it up for no reason. It’s hard to criticize a man for being concussed when someone who, at times, plays recklessly, Jadeveon Clowney, lands on the back of his head, but whether it’s by happenstance or not, the facts are the facts.

2017, 2018, and the 2019-2020 season all ended for Philly with Wentz on the sideline. Last year, he missed most of his first-ever playoff appearance. Availability is a skill, and the possibility of Carson Wentz missing playing time is real and constant.

If you say you’re confident with the idea of Nate Sudfeld filling in as a backup, you’re fibbing. If you believe Hurts can’t supplant Sudfeld as the backup, you may want to rethink that.

What if Wentz does go down? Are you any more confident in Sudfeld than Hurts? What if the latter wins the backup role? He does provide a skillset Sudfeld doesn’t have. The importance of a backup quarterback can’t be overstated, and having one that led both the Alabama Crimson Tide and Oklahoma Sooners to the College Football Playoff is a nice luxury to have.
