Philadelphia Eagles 2020 training camp profile: RB Boston Scott
By Hunter Doyle
Here’s what Philadelphia Eagles fans should expect from Boston Scott in 2020.
The Eagles are putting a lot of trust in Scott to step up as one of the top three options in the running back committee. Sanders will easily be the lead back but Scott is going to play an important role when he is on the field.
Many fans and experts have compared Scott to Darren Sproles because of his size and the fact that the Eagles have used him in the same capacity that he used Sproles in before his arrival. He took most of his snaps out of the shotgun formation. He caught screen passes and lined up at receiver, and he returned punts and kickoffs. He did it all. The Eagles tried to get him into the open field with room to run anyway that they could.
As mentioned, the Eagles’ lack of activity at the running back position in the offseason likely means that Boston Scott will see the field a lot more. While he was used exclusively at the end of 2019, there were some games where he wasn’t as explosive.
Pederson and Staley like to ride the hot hand with the running back committee. That won’t always be Scott, but he’s still in line to have a nice season. Sproles wasn’t always the guy with the hot hand either, but when he was, he certainly did his share of damage. Scott is a player in that Sproles mode.
Scott always looked up to Sproles, growing up in Louisiana and watching Sproles have success with the Saints. He had the opportunity to learn under Sproles for the past year, and he’s already stepped into his role as a valuable contributor. 2020’s season will help him build off of what we saw in 2019 and turn into an all-purpose monster.
With all of the new weapons the Eagles had on offense, teams could forget about Scott underneath on short passes and runs which he’ll make them pay for with his acceleration and elusiveness. He plays with a lot of heart and it always shows. Eagles fans should be excited to see what he can bring to the table over a full 16 game season. Expect him to make an impact when he’s on the field.
