6 Reasons Bison quarterback Trey Lance can be another Carson Wentz
By Hunter Doyle
1. You can’t talk about Carson Wentz or Trey Lance without discussing the intangibles.
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields are going to make most of the headlines leading up to 2021’s NFL Draft and rightfully so. Lawrence is everything you would hope for in a quarterback prospect, and he’s a proven winner with a College Football Playoff National Championship win and a 25-1 win-loss record to his name. Fields took the college football world by storm and had the Buckeyes one touchdown away from a trip to the national title game in his first year as the team’s starter.
North Dakota State Bison quarterback Trey Lance will be overshadowed by both of them, but he still possesses all of the tools to succeed at the next level. In his redshirt freshman season, he took the reigns as the starter (Carson Wentz wasn’t a starter until his redshirt junior season). At just 19 years of age, Lance didn’t disappoint while leading the Bison to a 16-0 record and their eighth national championship in nine seasons.
Lance is just as strong of a prospect as some of the top names that we’ve seen in recent seasons. He’s the full package. He’s a great kid with a great personality. He’s received praise from both his teammates and head coach Matt Entz, but it’s on the field where he brings everything to the table.
He’s got good size for the position. At 223 pounds, he’s not afraid to take a hit and fight for extra yardage. He’s also six-foot-three which is the average size for an NFL quarterback. Sure, you can nitpick and say that he could be a bit taller, but it’s not that concerning when you consider that Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson, and Drew Brees have had success despite being a little shorter.
