2 Philadelphia Eagles with most to gain after Josh Perkins lands on IR
Caleb Wilson’s chance of making this Philadelphia Eagles roster is slim, but there is a chance.
He’s a longshot, but don’t be shocked if Caleb Wilson sticks around to the end of Philadelphia Eagles camp and earns a spot on the practice squad. Don’t be shocked if he’s cut next week either. That’s how fine the line is here.
By now, you’ve probably resigned yourselves to the theory that both Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert have spots on the 53-man roster. That’s a pretty safe bet, right? The question is, now, whether or not Philly will keep three tight ends.
Remember, they began the 2020 campaign with just Ertz and Goedert and, sometimes, rotated Andre Dillard in as a glorified tight end in short-yardage and goal-line situations. Conventional thinking could lead one to believe that three tight ends on the 2020 roster makes sense, and had we been having this discussion two weeks ago, most of us would have said Perkins was the third guy.
With him out, Caleb Wilson is now the most experienced tight end on this team not named Ertz or Goedert or Swoopes (more on that last guy later). After the Arizona Cardinals drafted him in the seventh round of 2019’s draft (He was ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ or the last guy taken in the selection meeting), he was waived on August 31st. Arizona re-signed him to their practice squad the next day.
That’s where the Washington Football Team found him. They signed him off of the Cardinals’ practice squad to their active roster on December 13th of 2019. He was waived on August 3rd. The Eagles claimed him off of waivers a day later. Now, with no Perkins, he’s in a battle with two younger guys for what may be one roster spot. Can he battle his way onto the roster?
