NFL fans discover a star with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2016, and the rookie quarterback shines in spite of his receiving corps, not because of them.

It’s incredible how long NFL seasons are. Week 1 seems like a completely different season than the one you’re watching at around Christmas time, but if you’re still so stubborn that you don’t want to buy into the statement that Carson Wentz as a stud quarterback after what he did in 2019, maybe what he did as a rookie will sway you.

The receiving corps in Doug Pederson’s first season as head coach was almost exactly the same as Chip Kelly’s last season. The biggest difference was Riley Cooper was replaced by the incomparable… Dorial Green-Beckham, taking a wildly mediocre unit to a remarkably underwhelming one. ‘DGB’ was seen as a gamble when the Eagles traded tackle Dennis Kelly for his services. Unfortunately, said gamble didn’t pay off. Green-Beckham proceeded to thrill ‘Birds’ fans with 392 yards receiving and two touchdowns in his one season with the Eagles. Laugh if you must, but the joke is a lot funnier when you consider he was the second leading wide receiver for a rookie Carson Wentz that season. Zach Ertz would lead the team in receiving. ‘DGB’ ranked second among actual wide receivers.

Matthews followed up his 2015 season with 804 yards receiving and three touchdowns in what would become his final season in his first run as an Eagle as Philly traded him to the Buffalo Bills for Ronald Darby the following the season. His career only went downhill from there.

Agholor regressed in his second season (another telling sign) and Josh Huff remained on the roster in spot duty until his brush with the law closed the book on his Eagles career. 2016 was so bad that Eagles fans were begging for more Bryce Treggs and Paul Turner in hopes that they could potentially become studs. They didn’t (sigh). Let’s move on.
