Philadelphia Eagles rookie John Hightower may stun a few NFL defenses in 2020.

At times, there are a few whispers that football purists have a difficult time taking the Boise State Broncos seriously. Why? It’s simple actually. They’re stuck out there in the middle of Idaho, they play on a blue football field, and they aren’t a part of a Power 5 Conference. The Philadelphia Eagles may have found a diamond in the rough though in the form of John Hightower.

Things change quickly in the NFL, don’t they? Even with the knowledge that Alshon Jeffery would begin the 2020 season on Philly’s PUP (physically unable to perform) list, if you took a poll about three months ago, most would have thought that Hightower’s ceiling in 2020 was a spot on the practice squad. Most thought the rookie would have been nestled on Philly’s wide receivers depth chart behind DeSean Jackson, JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward, Marquise Goodwin, and Jalen Reagor.

Fast forward, and Jeffery is, indeed, on the PUP list, which frees up a roster spot. COVID-19 forced Goodwin to opt out of 2020’s season, and that means a roster spot that he would have most certainly occupied is also open. Hightower has had a great camp, and fellow rookie draftee Quez Watkins has experienced recent injuries. Don’t be surprised if Hightower lands on the 53-man roster.

Hightower hauled in 82 career receptions at the collegiate level for 1,447 yards, and he found his way into the end zone for 14 times as a receiver (he added two more on 24 career rushing attempts). That’s an average of 17.6 yards-per-reception if you’re wondering. If that translates to the NFL level. We might begin using phrases like ‘draft steal’. He’s six-foot-two. He tips the scales at 190 pounds. This guy could special if coached appropriately. Everyone loves what they’ve seen from him so far as they should.
