Philadelphia Eagles could make Leonard Fournette into another LeGarrette Blount
How many Philadelphia Eagles fans are thinking about LeGarrette Blount?
Well, that was unexpected! In a move that no Philadelphia Eagles fan or any other NFL fan saw coming, with about a week until teams make roster cuts and announce who’s on their respective 53-man rosters, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced on Monday, August’s final day, that their decision was to part ways with the fourth-overall selection from 2017’s NFL Draft, running back Leonard Fournette.
Here’s a clip of that wildly entertaining bunch at NFL Network’s Good Morning Football talking about the news. Take a look for yourself.
Welp, it looks like the Jags are going with Devine Ozigbo and Nathan Cottrell at running back. Keep in mind the fact that Yannick Ngakoue was moved a day earlier. What in the world is going on in Duval County? Is this news shocking? No, it isn’t. There have been a few questions about how Fournette handles himself both on and off of the field, but we’ve seen what happens when you add troubled personalities to strong locker rooms. Sometimes, they become distractions, but oftentimes, it works. The question is this.
How many Eagles fans are thinking about LeGarrette Blount right now? In one season with the ‘Birds’, Blount, who was totally ignored by the Eagles offensive coaches in Game 2 of the 2017 NFL season by the way (a game that they lost to the Kansas City Chiefs), made a mark on this franchise that will be felt forever.
He ran for 766 yards on 173 carries in the regular season, including a long jaunt that sealed the deal in Los Angeles versus the Chargers. Then, he scored a touchdown in every game of the Eagles’ postseason Super Bowl run. All of that, and there were some people that were of the theory that he might have been cooked after a season where he carried the ball over 300 times for the New England Patriots (if you include the Patriots).
Fournette could be Blount 2.0 for this Eagles team. he doesn’t need to start. He just needs to tote the rock on third down and short, in the red zone, and late in games to salt victories away.
Think about it. If you were an NFL G.M. who was on the hot seat and you had to win this season (we’re not saying that Howie Roseman is that guy but you get the point), would you roll the dice on Fournette being your fourth running back, along with Corey Clement, Miles Sanders, and Boston Scott, or would you rock out with Elijah Holyfield with the intentions of trying to make him your bell-cow running back?
Let’s be honest here. Whether you like the guy or not, Fournette is 25 years old, and he makes a ton of sense. He makes way more sense than a broken down LeSean McCoy did, and some of you were in love with that idea.
