Will these Philadelphia Eagles spend some of that 2020 purse?

At the time of this story being released, it’s Tuesday morning. We’re approaching the lunchtime hour if you live on the East Coast which means the first NFL game of the season is scheduled for a little over 48 hours from now, and the first Philadelphia Eagles game of the season is on Sunday. For the second year in a row, Philly’s journey begins with a game versus the Washington Football Team.

Philly also has one available roster spot open and some coin that they can spend if they still want to make a move for one of the NFL’s top free agents on the market. The question is what re they thinking?

Here’s an interesting tidbit if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

If you’re like most ‘Birds’ fans or members of the media, you hang out on Twitter a lot, and though most of us knew that Philadelphia had a reasonable amount of cap room for 2020 (to this point, they’re screwed for 2021, but they look fairly decent for 2020), but when you look at tweets like one Alert Breer dropped on Labor Day, the imagination starts to wander.

Take a look at this one.

Now, you may not have ever been in love with the idea of Philly adding Jadeveon Clowney. Most of our staff here at ITI wasn’t, but as the debate continues to rage about whether or not this team is ‘all-in’ on winning in 2020, there’s another way that can be weighed.

Jadeveon Clowney could have helped this team win. For all of his flaws, he’s better than Derek Barnett is, and after watching Howie Roseman fail at bringing in guys like Yannick Ngakoue, DeAndre Hopkins, and, yes, Clowney, it’s easy to ask a question.

The Eagles could rent a guy or two 2020, couldn’t they? They’re just one or two pieces away from being a real contender, and $18.4 million could help them remedy that. The question is, with only one available roster spot open and both Quez Watkins and Will Parks on the injured reserve, is Philly keeping that space available to make bringing one of those guys back easier? Bringing one back would place the roster at 53 men. Bringing both back means the team will have to say goodbye to one of the guys already on the roster.

Remember Alshon Jeffery is on the active roster which could mean the team might believe he can return earlier than the midpoint of the season, but if he can’t, might he be moved to the IR. It’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
