The Philadelphia Eagles shuffle the deck again.

Heading into Week 2, Philadelphia Eagles fans feel a whole lot better than they did at about 4:30 p.m. EST on September 13th. Miles Sanders should play on Sunday as should Derek Barnett and Lane Johnson. That’s good news, but right around lunchtime on the Saturday before their second game of the 2020 season, they were still tweaking their roster.

According to an official team statement, they’ve elevated cornerback Trevor Williams from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game against the Rams. Let’s unpack a couple of things here.

Here are two things for Philadelphia Eagles fans to consider.

First thing’s first. The Eagles probably aren’t going to utilize Williams much unless it’s on special teams, and even then, they’d want to do so wisely. This appears to be a decision that’s more about depth than anything else. Darius Slay and Avonte Maddox are still expected to start on the outside. Nickell Robey Coleman is the man who will man the slot.

If anything happens to them, Cre’Von LeBlanc is probably the next man up, and ‘NRC’ can be moved outside. Don’t expect to see Williams on the field unless there’s an emergency.

The other thing is this. Some of you may be a little unfamiliar with Williams, so here’s the skinny. After going undrafted in the same draft class that brought in Carson Wentz and Jared Goff, Williams signed with what was still the San Diego Chargers at the time. He remained with the team as they moved to Los Angeles and until the 2019 season, but his run there ended after he was placed on the team’s injured reserve on September 11th of 2019 and was waived from the IR on October 7th of that year.

The Arizona Cardinals added him to their team a day later but released him on October 23rd. Philadelphia signed him to a future or reserve deal on January 10th of this year, and after being released and re-signed twice here we are. It appears he’ll suit up in Week 2. Keep an eye on him.
