It’s official. The Philadelphia Eagles have a split-personality disorder

A tie? Really? There were reasons for optimism, sort of. There were moments that almost brought you to tears, but in the end the Philadelphia Eagles game versus the Cincinnati Bengals, a team that they should have been better than, ended in a tie. That’s the second time in four meetings between these teams that we’ve seen that happen. Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde isn’t just a classic novel written by Robert Louis Stevenson, it might be the best way you can describe 2020’s version of the Philadelphia Eagles.

It’s almost like we’re taking dance lessons, two steps forward and two steps backward. Better yet, perhaps there are two Philadelphia Eagles teams. Philly did some decent things on offense. That toss from Carson Wentz to Greg Ward to close the first half was super clutch.

That was the 100th touchdown pass of his career, and that also means that he’s gotten to that plateau faster than any quarterback in franchise history. He’s done it in 59 games. There was also that scramble at the end of the second half by ’11’ to tie the game and send the game into overtime. In that one, we saw Wentz’s heart and will to win.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to shake the memory of those interceptions, that bad miss as Miles Sanders was running free down the left sideline, and that near-interception on his first pass in overtime. Then again, on the other hand, he did drop that dime to Zach Ertz in the extra period.

Oh, if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan, it doesn’t stop there.

Let’s talk about the defense. They registered eight sacks and more than ten additional hits on rookie quarterback Joe Burrow. Derek Barnett got his first two sacks of the season, but then again, it’s hard to shake the memory of Nathan Gerry getting lost in coverage or Philly giving up that long run on third-and-long. They did stand up twice in the overtime session though, and there are several members of the ‘Birds’ defense that deserve a game ball for this one.

The Eagles were flirting with their second tie in their last four meetings versus the Bengals as Philly did just enough in overtime to get themselves in position to attempt a game-winning field goal. Then Matt Pryor was flagged for a false start. Yep, this one ends in a tie. Well, at least they didn’t lose. As a matter of fact, in a bad NFC East division, it’s hard not to believe the champion won’t have a losing record.

And then the tie might come in handy!

Philadelphia’s next game is in primetime versus the defending NFC Champions, the San Francisco 49ers. The carnage continues as Philly lost both Dallas Goedert and Avonte Maddox to ankle injuries, and they lost DeSean Jackson to a hamstring injury. Oh, and Jason Peters limped off of the field at the end of the overtime session.  ‘Birds’ fans everywhere will be monitoring their progress all week, but a tough stretch of games approaches, and sadly, if you’re an Eagles fan, you have no idea which version of this team is going to show up.
