player. 54. . . . Nathan Gerry, linebacker.

Why is Nate Gerry still getting snaps for the Philadelphia Eagles?

The big criticism of Nate Gerry coming into this season was his issues as a tackler. He missed 15.2 percent of his tackles in 2019. General manager and vice president Howie Roseman decided to stick with Gerry and the young linebackers coming into the season. Gerry’s saving grace in 2019 was his ability in pass coverage as he allowed just a 70.2 passer rating when targeted.

After allowing just 340 yards and two touchdowns in coverage the past two years, Gerry has already allowed 158 yards and two touchdowns in 2020. Quarterbacks are also 13 of 13 when throwing his way. It’s a shame because this was a guy who had made some progress after transitioning from safety to linebacker in his rookie year. It appeared that maybe he could be a role player for this team but with the way that he has played, he might not get a contract extension.

His performance begs the question of why Davion Taylor isn’t getting more snaps. Taylor needs to gain more experience and learn from his mistakes. If Gerry is going to make rookie mistakes and miss his assignments, Taylor might as well be out there. How can he be any worse? At some point, the Eagles will need to give their third-round pick a chance because Gerry isn’t earning the confidence that he’s been given.
