Philadelphia Eagles versus 49ers: 4 Important matchups to watch
Can the Philadelphia Eagles’ D.C. limit Kyle Shanahan’s offensive genius?
Unfortunately Eagles fans, the honest answer to that question is probably a resounding no. Jim Schwartz has had his measure taken by John Donovan and Dwayne Haskins, Sean McVay and Jared Goff, and most recently, Zac Taylor and Joe Burrow for most of Week 3.
It’s hard to understand why Schwartz does some of the things he does, like that thing where half of the secondary just hangs out around the first down marker and hopes something bad doesn’t happen. What’s scary is this. Kyle Shanahan may have the most complex offensive mind that Schwartz has had to duel with in quite some time. History has taught us that things normally don’t go in favor of the Eagles’ defense when that happens.
This thing could get out of hand and ugly quickly. Think about that game in New Orleans in 2018 or the massacre versus Kirk Cousins in 2019. Schwartz is overrated, and if Philly can’t stand up to a 49ers onslaught on Sunday night, the torches and pitchforks held by everyone who wants him fired might be seen as his naysayers picket up and down Broad Street on Sunday night after the game.
