3. The Philadelphia Eagles must examine the kicker position.

The look on Cameron Johnston’s face in the above image says it all: frustration. The Philadelphia Eagles have a kicker problem. And it’s not just that Jake Elliott is now kicking at a 75 percent clip on the season, it’s that he’s uncuttable.

Midway through the 2019 season, Howie Roseman decided to extend Jake Elliott. The former fifth-round pick hauled in $21.8 million stretched out over five seasons. Since signing that deal, Elliott is kicking at 73 percent. That percentage would’ve ranked Elliott 27th out of 33 qualifying kickers in 2019.

So, the Philadelphia Eagles are yet again stuck between a rock and a hard place with an underperforming core piece in the Super Bowl run. Alshon Jeffery’s contract was bad. DeSean Jackson’s is bad. Some of the aging offensive lineman’s contracts are immovable. But this Elliott contract might take the cake.

If the Eagles decided they needed to move in another direction at kicker, cutting Elliott would cost the team nearly $8 million in dead cap. Yes, $8 million. Even if they ride out 2020 with Elliott, cutting him in 2021 would still be a $5.3 million cap hit.

It’s simply frustrating to look back on some of the deals Roseman has handed out to players. Roseman has been regarded as a smart general manager in years past. He’s one of a few current GMs who has actually put together a championship roster. However, Elliott, after missing crucial kicks throughout the entire 2020 season, has now hit rock bottom after botching a 29-yard chip shot against the Giants. Unfortunately, Elliott is simply uncuttable. That’s what’s most frustrating.
