Zach Ertz, tight end. 2. player. 54. . .

This one has to hurt if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

It was never supposed to be this way. In 2020, Zach Ertz was supposed to, again, be one of the cornerstones of an Eagles offense and the man that broke Harold Carmichael‘s franchise record for career receptions in a ‘Birds’ jersey, but here we stand.

After seven games, third-stringer Richard Rodgers has outproduced Ertz’s season totals. Rodgers has 184 receiving yards and a 12.3 yards per reception average despite seeing the ball thrown in his direction fewer times and hauling in nine fewer passes.

Rodgers has been targeted 18 times as opposed to 45 times for Ertz and he’s caught 15 passes. Ertz has caught 24. Oh, and that 12.3 yards-per-reception average Rodgers boasts exceeds what Ertz has done by almost five full yards.

Maybe the contract discussions have been on Ertz’s mind. Maybe he just isn’t the same guy and he has regressed. Regardless of what’s happened, both of these statements are true. One, Ertz is signed for two more years after Philly picked up an option in his contract for the 2021 NFL season during the most recent offseason.

Second, with the way things have gone during the first half of 2020’s regular season, Philly could cut ties and move on. They love Dallas Goedert. Some NFL pundits already view the younger guy as a top-ten tight end.

Moving Zach Ertz would hurt. Seeing him in another jersey might make you sick, but regardless of what happens, there’s nothing outlandish about the idea that 2020 could be the final run for ’86’ in midnight green, especially seeing as how Philly has all of those financial restraints in 2021 from a cap perspective.
