The Philadelphia Eagles’ head coach may finally be onto something.

Yes, we know. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz has had his issues this year and has shown massive regression. Any statement to the contrary is false. Wentz’s struggles aren’t Philly’s biggest issue though (believe it or not).

Recently, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson said something interesting that shed a lot of light on the franchise quarterback’s current situation and the state of this franchise in his post-game interview following a win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Here’s a direct quote:

"I look back to 2017, and I know everybody, and probably you included,  we compare (things to 2017) when he had an MVP-type season, and  I can honestly tell you, if there’s a common denominator, we had stability around Carson Wentz. We had three receivers, three tight ends, (and) running backs.  We didn’t have the moving parts we’ve had last year, already in the first part of this season, you know, different offensive line changes. We had stability, and as an offense, we had continuity, right? So, that to me has been probably the biggest difference between then and now."

Most fans can agree that much of what Coach said is obvious, but many may not understand that Pederson’s statements on stability might mean more than just finding players to surround Wentz with. Pederson’s statements can be seen as frustrating to this fan base, and it casts a gloomy shadow on both the coaching staff and the front office.

Fans, sports enthusiasts, and analytic junkies have been quick to call for Wentz’s benching or Pederson’s firing. There haven’t been too many people that have broken down how the Eagles have ended up in their current position.

Sure lousy draft picks and questionable roster management has hurt this team, but ‘Iggles’ fans have seen Wentz overcome and defy the odds while working with a lot less talent around him than he has now, so the question is if Wentz has been able to do more with less, why has he regressed so far as a quarterback with better talent around him now? Let’s take a few common denominators and dive into what some underlying issues may be.
