Dissecting 2 positives from this struggling Philadelphia Eagles team
1. Opposing offenses aren’t airing it out on the Philadelphia Eagles secondary.
Three interesting things pop out at you if you look at the Eagles’ defensive stats: passing yards allowed, passing touchdowns, and team sacks. The Birds have given up the sixth-fewest passing yards in the NFL this season which may come as a shock to some seeing as how this defense always seems to be on the field.
Unfortunately, this Eagles defense is also near the bottom of the league in terms of rushing yards allowed. This is often how opposing offenses have been able to take advantage of this sometimes porous defense.
Here’s more good news. Heading into Week 12, the Birds are also ranked third in the entire NFL in terms of the fewest passing touchdowns given up. Only the Los Angeles Rams and Chicago Bears rank higher. This team needs to look for ways to be better versus the run though as they’ve given up the fourth-most rushing touchdowns during the 2020 season (15).
If you love sacks, Philadelphia’s defense has gotten plenty of them. They’ve racked up the third-most sacks this season with 34. Only the Washington Football Team and the Pittsburgh Steelers have more. It might be hard to remember that sometimes as Philly’s offensive line has allowed a league-leading 40 sacks on Carson Wentz. The name of the game going forward is consistency on both sides of the ball.
