2 Reasons Philadelphia Eagles get slight passes for ignoring DK Metcalf
Here are a few other thoughts if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.
If you’ve been watching JJAW and Metcalf since the Eagles made the decision to take the former just seven picks before the latter you don’t care about that today, and that’s completely understandable. If seeing the Birds take Jalen Reagor one selection before Justin Jefferson bothers you, it may be because of that JJAW and Metcalf dynamic as well. No one would blame you for that feeling either.
Hindsight is always seen in 20-20 vision, and though the answer to who’s the better prospect is obvious now (and though it’s obvious that Howie Roseman is an awful evaluator of talent), one can see why he passed on D.K. Metcalf, so don’t beat him up too badly for that. If you want to blame him for something, blame him for passing on running backs David Montgomery and Devin Singletary or wide receiver Terry McLaurin. All were available when Philly took JJAW with the 57th-overall selection.
Since Arcega-Whiteside and Metcalf entered the league, Philly’s second-year man has been a disappointment. His career totals at the time of this story being published are as follows: 12 receptions for 214 yards and one career receiving touchdown.
Metcalf came close to eclipsing that in Seattle’s Week 12 tilt, ironically a game that was played in primetime versus Philly on national television. D.K. had ten catches for 177 yards in that one after being infuriated by the Eagles’ defensive coordinator before the game even started. For his career, again at the time of this story being published, he’s hauled in 127 receptions for 2,158 receiving yards and 17 trips to the end zone (if you include two playoff games). You can see why Birds fans are disgusted.
Here’s a controversial statement. Though most would have decided to take Metcalf over JJAW in 2019 even with the neck injury, it’s understandable why Philly didn’t even if you disagree with the decision. There were quite a few teams that passed on him. Remember, there were theories that a rough shot placed in the wrong area could end his career. Thankfully that hasn’t happened.
