What happened to this Philadelphia Eagles team after 2017?

Here’s the picture if you need one painted. Less than three years ago, Doug Pederson made a promise to Philadelphia Eagles fans everywhere. ‘This is our new norm’ he said. ‘To be playing football in February’.

And why would Eagles fans think anything different at the time? The Eagles had an MVP candidate in Carson Wentz returning from injury who was hungrier than ever for success. Doug Pederson was widely regarded as one of the best head coaches in football after running an offense that turned a backup quarterback into a Super Bowl MVP. They also had Howie Roseman, the mastermind behind the scenes who made calculated signings and trades that brought the Eagles their first Vince Lombardi Trophy.

These three men were supposed to turn the Philadelphia Eagles into a dynasty. They were supposed to deliver success to a fanbase that had been through years of torment. They were supposed to make football in February ‘the new norm’.

Fast forward three years later, and there is a case to be made that all three of them should be relieved of their duties.

The Philadelphia Eagles missed their window of opportunity.

Since that magical 2017 season, the Eagles have lost more games than they have won. Sure, they’ve squeaked into the playoffs twice, but there have been no signs of them being a Super Bowl contender. And after a comical Week 12 performance versus the Seattle Seahawks, it’s clear that the Eagles need to enter a rebuilding phase.

Expectation garners disappointment, and unfortunately for Philadelphia Eagles fans, expectations have been high these past few years. The excuse last year was that Carson Wentz had no playmakers. The excuse the year before that was Carson Wentz wasn’t healthy.

Jeffrey Lurie, the owner, chairman, and CEO of the Eagles appears ready to blow things up and start anew. He’s reportedly already let the team know that there will be changes if their play doesn’t improve.

The window for winning in the NFL is very slim and the Eagles have missed theirs. Each passing day, the 2017 championship proves to have been the result of what some might call ‘catching lightning in a bottle’. Fans will have to salvage the winning taste of the 2017 Eagles for a few more years as a total rebuild seems imminent and necessary.
