4 Philadelphia Eagles rookies that we can already call busts
Someone tell the Philadelphia Eagles that Davion Taylor is a safety.
Okay, seriously, let’s talk. No one else thinks that Davion Taylor is a safety and not a linebacker? Sure, he racked up 129 career tackles and two sacks from the linebacker position (that includes 18 that resulted in a loss of yardage). Sure, Philly drafted him in the third round with the intent that he’d help satisfy a huge hole at Philly’s second level of the defense, but he just hasn’t gotten the snaps needed to warrant any confidence that they’ve placed in him.
Taylor has been available for every Eagles game. He’s dressed, but he’s only been on the field for 32 defensive snaps, roughly four percent of the team’s total this season. Unfortunately, that only covers three games (the Baltimore Ravens, the New York Giants, and the Cleveland Browns). Often, he hasn’t done much (nine total tackles). Even more often than that, he’s looked like a deer in headlights.
Yes, you can blame that on coaching. You can also blame that on the fact that he’s playing out of position. Taylor isn’t an NFL linebacker. He’s a safety. If Philly acknowledges that, they may have a diamond on their hands. If they don’t, we may continue to see him struggle.
He’s not going anywhere this season or next season. Again, he’s a third-round draft choice, but if the Birds continue to utilize him incorrectly, don’t be surprised if you’re hearing the term ‘bust’ a lot during the 2021 season.
