3 Philadelphia Eagles veterans who should be benched with Cason Wentz
The Philadelphia Eagles named their starting quarterback for Week 14.
Tuesday, December 8th, is a day that will live in Philadelphia Eagles lore forever, but for all of the wrong reasons. In a conversation with team insider Dave Spadaro, head coach Doug Pederson confirmed that the Birds would be starting Jalen Hurts over Carson Wentz in Week 14. It’s a move that doesn’t come as a huge shock to Birds fans, and much of the reason for it is Wentz has been a shell of the player that he once was.
Weeks of sub-par performances demonstrated that a change was needed at the position, and now, following the move, the fifth-year head coach has seemingly sent a message to the rest of the team.
In the days leading up to Week 13’s game, Wentz addressed his team to take accountability for his performance during the 2020 season. Nothing changed versus the Green Bay Packers, and now a huge warning has been given to every player on the roster. The fact of the matter is this. Philly shouldn’t stop now. There are several other players that deserve their spot on the pine right next to 11.
Here are three more Philadelphia Eagles that should take a demotion.
Doug’s message isn’t complete. The best players should play, and that isn’t what’s happening in Philadelphia. So many of the other veterans are robbing some of the younger talents of snaps and experience. You guys know who we’re talking about, but if you don’t, let’s call out a few names.
Jason Peters, Guard.
Not only has the longtime All-Pro Jason Peters become a liability to his team, but he’s also becoming a liability for himself and his legacy. Peters, now 38 years old, has had an awful season after stinking up the joint slightly in 2019.
The nine-time Pro-Bowler looks out of shape, slow, and of course, fragile. When casual fans started calling for Jordan Mailata to play over Peters at left tackle, that should have been a sign to the Eagles staff that his time playing the right guard position or any position along this offensive line should be at its end.
Alshon Jeffery, Wide receiver.
Can anyone explain why Alshon Jeffery is still getting playing time? He’s another expensive veteran who’s been nothing but a body. At this point, Jeffery is just stealing. He’s stealing playing time from players who deserve it. He’s stealing money from the Eagles. He can’t get out of town fast enough.
Jalen Mills, Safety.
ITI speaks for so many Birds fans when we say there’s no reason for Jalen Mills to continue to play the safety position. Let’s just be blunt about it. He’s awful, No, like really awful. This has become a sort of two for one situation. Mills should have his starting privileges at safety revoked. He should be kept on ice in the secondary’s freezer just in case Philly has an emergency at the cornerback position.
The argument can be made that at least four to five more players can be added to this list, but these are the three that should definitely take up permanent residence next to Carson Wentz in Week 14 (and possibly beyond that). Eagles fans are well aware of the commitment this team has made to these players, but these are moves that should have been made weeks ago. Will the Philadelphia Eagles’ front office and coaches pull the trigger? They had better start dedicating more time to thinking about it.
