The son of a former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback lands in Philly.

Eagles fans remember the lockdown corner that Asante “pick six” Samuel was 2008-2011. They will get another one if they take his son in Round 2. Asante Samuel Jr. was asked to be the top cover corner for Florida State. He delivered. When Darius Slay arrived in Philly, one of the big things that analysts talked about was that he could play without safety help. Samuel did that often at FSU. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz prefers to go with off-man coverage or soft zone coverage. Samuel played off-man a lot at FSU and could fit right in.

Unlike his dad, he’s a great tackler in space too. He can help in the run game. Even when he does get beat in coverage he can bring his man down quickly. The five-foot-ten, 184-pound corner is going to turn heads leading up to the draft. His one downfall is that he is not much of a ball hawk, something that his dad was an expert at it. Hopefully, Samuel Sr. can give him a few tips on that. Cornerback is a difficult transition into the NFL so fans will have to be patient with him.

After cutting Rasul Douglas and Sidney Jones, there were very few answers opposite of Darius Slay. This season made it more obvious that Avonte Maddox is supposed to play in the slot. Craig James was not able to stay healthy. The ‘Birds’ might have something special in Michael Jacquet but he hasn’t played enough. Slay isn’t on a long-term deal so the Eagles need to invest in young guys even with him here.
