Philadelphia Eagles prospect profile: Clemson wide receiver Cornell Powell
The Philadelphia Eagles need to start filling a few holes.
It is no secret that the Philadelphia Eagles are riddled with holes on both sides of the ball. It seems as though ever since they won the big game in 2017, the Birds have gotten worse for the wear, leading to the dysfunction that was the 2020 season.
No matter where you look on this roster you’ll find one issue after another and a lack of talent. Every Eagles fan has an opinion on where this team should begin making corrections, and that often leads to an argument. One thing can be agreed upon though. They need to hit on their 2021 Draft Picks.
With that being said, we at ITI have already begun our search for the players who could help the Philadelphia Eagles going forward. Enter Clemson wideout and North Carolina native Cornell Powell. The six-foot, 210-pound wide receiver is a big play waiting to happen. Blessed with great hands a strong base and a willingness to play in a crowd, Powell has the skillset and the tools that could give the Eagles’ offense a boost.
Cornell Powell could be a big-play threat for the Eagles.
Although his career stats may not blow you away (85 receptions,1,072 yards, and eight TDs), when you watch the film, you see the potential he possesses. Powell is a good route-runner and has the ability to play both in the slot or on the outside.
He’s built like a running back and acts like one when he has the ball in his hands. A late bloomer of sorts, Powell truly came on in his fifth year with a career-high of 743 yards receiving and a long of 70 yards. That doesn’t include his eight receptions, 139 yards, and two touchdowns in the Sugar Bowl.
What stands out about Powell is his football IQ. He understands what defenses are trying to do. His willingness to block and help in the run game, as well as his ability to weave through traffic, shines on tape. Think of him as a thicker-bodied Jeremy Maclin.
A quick conversation Philadelphia Eagles fans may be interested in.
Speaking briefly to the Tiger senior, ITI spoke with Mr. Powell about his playing style. This is what he had to say:
"I feel like I can be a playmaker or difference-maker at the next level. At Clemson, you have a standard at wideout that I take pride in. We are coached to be mentally and physically ready to play in a pro-style offense. I know I can play inside and out and be a guy that my team can lean on. As far as my career goes, it hasn’t all gone great as far as my stats (are concerned), but I know what I am capable of, and all I need is an opportunity."
The Philadelphia Eagles’ lack of talent at wideout has been well-publicized. At times, it’s also been a running joke. The need to add playmakers to the offense seems to grow weekly, and adding a player like Powell could go a long way in remedying that.
Adding Powell to the team with Reagor, Greg Ward, and possibly another prospect could give the offense a boost. It could also give them a difference-maker. Place Powell on your imaginary draft boards if you’re a Birds fan. You can best believe the Eagles have him on theirs.
