. . Lane Johnson, right tackle. 65. player. 54.

This Philadelphia Eagles standout doesn’t get mentioned enough.

Right tackle Lane Johnson is actually one of a handful of decisions that Chip Kelly got right. Another will be named in a second, but when we mention the great Eagles of two or more coaching eras of Birds football, 65’s name is one that should and will roll off of our tongues for quite some time.

Here’s a controversial statement. Though he should have never won the award, you can make an argument that Lane Johnson, at times, has deserved NFL MVP discussion. Why? It’s quite simple.

We all know that the MVP Trophy has become an award given to the game’s best quarterback, but if you truly base the word value on its definition, there may not be many players in this Eagles franchise that are more valuable to this franchise’s success than 65. This has always been a better team with him on the field than it has been without him.

Johnson was named a member of the Pro Football Writers of America’s All-NFC Team in 2017. He was a First-team All-Pro that same season. He’s also a three-time Pro Bowl nod (2017–2019) who would probably have more of those on his resume if he played left tackle.

Johnson might be someone who is on a thin line of guys that you can argue on or off of the list of future Hall of Famers. Another Pro Bowl or two could change that in the minds of the national media, but those of us who have watched his career more closely understand what we have seen. This is one of the great tackles in the game’s history.
