The cornerback position is the biggest hole on the Philadelphia Eagles’ roster.

Another year passes, and it’s the same old story and narrative. Will the Philadelphia Eagles go with a wide receiver or a cornerback when they’re on the clock in Round 1 of the NFL Draft? At some point, they have to hit on these draft picks and with the guys that they find in free agency.

The Birds added Darius Slay and Nickell Robey-Coleman during the most recent NFL offseason. Let’s put it this way. One of the guys is a star, and the other guy isn’t. This team can’t trot the same guys out onto the field that they relied on in 2020 though.

Avonte Maddox is too inconsistent. Cre’Von LeBlanc is fragile physically (and inconsistent). The confidence in Michael Jacquet, Grayland Arnold, and Elijah Riley isn’t necessarily there yet, and though there seems to be a ton of confidence in him, one has to ask if defensive backs coach Marquand Manuel is the man to lead these guys.

Philly has questions about its wide receiver corps, but they have more about their secondary. This team still doesn’t know who should start on the other side of the defensive formation opposite ‘Big Play’. The Birds could use the sixth pick on Patrick Surtain II if he’s available, and that might solve the issue. The question is will they be able to ignore DeVonta Smith if he’s still on the board too?
