Carson Wentz’s future with these Philadelphia Eagles is still unclear
As the Philadelphia Eagles coaching search begins to become a clearer picture, one thing remains certain, the quarterback position. Carson Wentz‘s future is still very uncertain. It became a common thought among the Iggles’ fan base that, with Doug Pederson’s departure, we can gather that 11 is here to stay, right? Well, as it turns out, Doug’s employment with this team might not have anything to do with the Wentz dilemma at all.
At ITI, we already broke down a few takeaways from Eagles owner and CEO Jeff Lurie’s interesting (that’s a polite way to say it) press conference, however, something that Mr. Lurie said should really stick out to fans more than anything else. That would be when he called both Jalen Hurts and Carson Wentz ‘assets’.
Being the businessman Jeff Lurie is, perhaps taking too much from that would be reading too far into things. It’s still an interesting statement though.
Most Philly fans may think that the Eagles are looking at coaching candidates like Joe Brady and Mike Kafka to ‘fix’ Carson Wentz, but what if that isn’t the case? They may be looking at these types of candidates to develop further Jalen Hurts or, possibly, another drafted quarterback.
Are a Philadelphia Eagles and Wentz divorce the only option?
The recent report from Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jeff Mclane, stating that Wentz was all but uncoachable during this last season isn’t painting a flattering picture for any coach that might be thinking about taking the Eagles job, but this is a quarterback-rich draft that we’re approaching.
One of the common themes in the media is it’s concrete that the Birds won’t trade or cut Wentz due to his massive contract, but now, we’re starting to see that they may actually do just that. Not only should they cut Wentz, but it may also make more sense that they do, especially if this team is looking to be in rebuild mode for the foreseeable future.
Once, 11 was one of the game’s franchise quarterbacks. Now, we’re asking how much larger the cap hit would not be if he was allowed to walk and absent from this team in 2021. So, it really all comes down to who the new hire is at head coach, and that, ladies and gentlemen, may not have anything to do with fixing Carson Wentz. Nothing is set in stone yet, and Birds fans will have to wait and see, but the future for the veteran quarterback may be one in which he isn’t wearing midnight green.
