The new Philadelphia Eagles head coach is wasting no time building his staff. NFL reporter Albert Breer just reported via Twitter on January 23rd that the Birds will be hiring the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive backs coach, Jonathan Gannon, as the new defensive coordinator.

This is actually a great hire and great addition to the Eagles coaching staff. Like head coach Nick Sirianni, Gannon has been around the league for a while and has been apart of several different franchises. Gannon has had extensive experience training defensive backs and also has a proven track record of success to go along with it.

Having cornerstone pieces like Fletcher Cox and Darius Slay really makes the defensive coordinator job an exciting one to take over. So far, Gannon checks every box to make this defense successful.

The Philadelphia Eagles still need an offensive coordinator.

Now that the defensive coordinator spot has been filled, the Iggles are still on the hunt for an offensive coordinator. There are several strong candidates out there, but the fact that Sirianni can choose his own staff is a great sign that not everything will be a top-down decision.

So who could the new head coach pick? It depends if Sirianni chooses to call the plays or not. Sirianni calling plays may also depend upon what type of candidate he selects. If he were to choose someone like Jim Caldwell (please do), you could expect a veteran coordinator of his caliber to call the plays more than likely.

However, if the Birds’ head coach decides to go a younger route, Mike Kafka is still an extremely intriguing candidate. Yes, we’ve all seen the reports and heard what was said, but he is!  Sirianni may choose to take over play-calling duties. Philly fans can count out the Colts quarterback coach, Marcus Brady, for he was already named the new offensive coordinator for Indy.

As dark and gloomy as this offseason has been, some light is starting to break through the black clouds, and the optimism of this fan base should start to be lifted. Unlike head coaching candidates, there are several great candidates to fill the offensive coordinator role; fans will have to hang on for a little while longer to see who it could be.
