2 Interesting facts on Philadelphia Eagles OC Shane Steichen

One, think about how this team now has a new head coach, an offensive coordinator, a passing game coordinator, and a defensive coordinator that most Birds fans had to use a search engine to learn about. Second, think about how irritated most of you were with Philly’s defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Can you picture it?

Okay, now that you have all of that in your head, imagine this. What if another team had come to take Schwartz off of Philly’s hands much sooner? Stop for a second. Do you see how that smile crept across your face?

Okay, now think about this. That feeling you just felt with the statement about Schwartz leaving is apparently how Los Angeles Chargers fans feel knowing that they won’t have to put up with another season of watching Shane Steichen operate.

1. Other sports sites seem to agree with how Steichen is being painted.

Now, rumors can be tricky. They, most often, come down to the source and the intent. Knowing who said something and why they said it can help you determine what should be thrown out and what can be digested. Unfortunately, when you look around and you see more evidence supporting the claim, it’s hard not to raise the antenna.

Brandon Lee Gowton of Bleeding Green Nation recently penned a story after he spoke with Bolts From The Blue. Here are a few nuggets from a source that cover the Los Angeles Chargers daily.

"In all honesty, Chargers fans were fairly relieved that he would not be returning. Fans wanted a new face and they felt Steichen was a bit underwhelming as an OC. The majority will tell you Justin Herbert’s development was 99 percent thanks to (former Chargers quarterbacks coach) Pep Hamilton, so very few saw any real value in Steichen as the potential OC of the future."

Well, that isn’t good.

2. It isn’t much of a lengthy work history by offensive coordinator standards.

While you shouldn’t expect a resume of Wade Phillips’ or Jim Caldwell’s length, seeing as how the guy is only 35, Steichen’s meteoric rise from being an offensive assistant at Louisville in 2010 to the offensive coordinator’s chair in Philly at about ten years later will always grab one’s attention.

Sure, nabbing those young offensive minds is the NFL’s trend, but come on. Though those guys win from time to time, that theory hasn’t really led to a ton of postseason and Super Bowl wins. For some of us, we’ll stick with those grouchy older coaches who don’t have an Instagram account and can’t stand talking to the media.
