Philadelphia Eagles: What Jared Goff’s trade says about Carson Wentz
Days have passed since the Philadelphia Eagles introduced Nick Sirianni, and there’s something quite a few Birds fans can’t seem to get out of their minds. On January 29th, when asked about whether Carson Wentz and Jalen Hurts would compete for the starting role, Coach wouldn’t commit to an answer.
Almost three full days later, Sirianni spoke with Angelo Cataldi and The Morning Team, and when asked the same question, he gave a long answer before finally and hesitantly stating that there would be competition at every position. At least that’s what he sounded like he was getting at.
The Philadelphia Eagles watch a huge trade from the sideline.
Seeing as how there’s been a bit of a quarterback controversy in Philly since the last regular season, every ounce of news about any available or draftable signal-caller makes Birds fans think about the Eagles dilemma (or draw some parallel), so yes, the trade scenarios are still a thing.
When guys like Deshaun Watson and Matthew Stafford say they want out of their current situations, people start dreaming up trade scenarios. Our staff does it (hey, it’s Deshaun Watson). Other publications do the same thing. Here’s the thing though. We also know that the Eagles organization is committed to Carson Wentz, and this franchise is a long way from what we used to see in their decision-making process.
They used to move on from guys a year too early (Brian Dawkins). Now, they consistently move on from guys a year or more later than they should have (Mack Hollins, Jason Peters, Alshon Jeffery, JJ Arcega-Whiteside), so again, there’s something that was said recently that our staff and several other Eagles fans can’t get out of our minds, something the coach said.
Here’s a story about the Philadelphia Eagles, Sirianni, Carson, and Jared Goff.
Remember that final stretch of Sirianni’s introductory presser? While many of us were pondering his answer about a quarterback battle between Wentz and Hurts, Coach gave us something, perhaps inadvertently, but he showed us Philly’s hand. That tends to happen when someone is nervous but continues to talk anyway.
Remember that part about Eagles executive vice president and general manager Howie Roseman having the final say on who is on the 53-man roster? That doesn’t have you thinking? How is Wentz not on the team if Howie decides who makes the cut? Then, there’s what we all watched over the final weekend in January. The Los Angeles Rams moved a contract that we were constantly told was immovable, the one belonging to Jared Goff.
Ladies and gentlemen, stop letting people, especially random fans on Twitter, lie to you. Carson Wentz signed his mega-extension just six days after Goff signed his. Both deals were supposed to hold their respective franchises hostage financially, but here are the facts. If the Rams can deal Goff, the Eagles most certainly can move Carson Wentz.
Heck, Wentz is supposed to be the better of the two right? The Detroit Lions wouldn’t have taken him? If you didn’t learn anything else this weekend, it should have been that. This theory that Carson can’t be traded can be put to bed now. The question is do the Eagles actually want to trade him? The answer to that is that they probably don’t.
Expect more issues from this Philadelphia Eagles team in 2021.
This Eagles franchise moved on from Nick Foles to make Carson Wentz happy. They got rid of a veteran leader in Malcolm Jenkins partially because they wanted Carson Wentz’s voice to be the loudest in the locker room. When Carson didn’t want to be coached hard, they gave him his buddy, Press Taylor, as his quarterback coach.
This franchise has done everything that they can to make 11 feel good about himself. God forbid that he should experience a little pressure right? That brings us back to that statement. You know, the one about Howie having the final say on who’s on the 53-man roster.
Seeing as how the G.M. has a Fathead of Wentz on the wall in his office and how he’s often admitted to getting attached to players, it’s hard to imagine a scenario where Wentz isn’t on this team. After all, the Eagles move on from guys a year too late as opposed to a year too early now.
