These days, it’s probably safe to state that any news involving the Philadelphia Eagles needs to be taken with a grain of salt or placed on a thin line between ‘patience’ and ‘how in the world could this possibly be taking so long?’.
Doug Pederson was relieved of his seat on the coaching staff on January 11th and has since vanished into thin air. That’s another story for another day, but it took the Birds one full month before they officially staffed and announced 2021’s coaching tree just three days before Valentine’s Day.
Oh, and that’s not all if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.
At the same time that all of that was going on, Birds fans and the rest of the NFL world received the news that Philly was actively seeking a trade to move on from Carson Wentz. Well, you know how that’s going.
At some point, you have to wonder if teams are waiting on the new league year, which would also mean the Philadelphia Eagles would be on the hook for a roster bonus they’re supposed to pay 11. Well, that’s no sweat off of the other 31 franchises’ backs.
Ever since this became news, we’ve all been inundated with trade scenarios and rumors that have led to nothing. Some say Philly’s asking price is too high. Others have asked if Carson Wentz’s lack of desire to speak to Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, his poor play in 2020, and his inflated contract might be part of the problem. The long and short of everything is this.
No one knows what the Birds are looking for or what their negotiations have entailed, but recently, Eagles legend Ron Jaworski threw his hat in the ring as he spoke with ABC-6 in Philly’s on Jeff Skversky. Jaws is hearing “the Colts have offered two second-round draft choices (and) maybe a third or fourth down the road.
That makes sense. Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard is notoriously a frugal shopper, so if the Birds are seeking two first-round selections, as many of us have heard, that explains Ballard’s lack of desire to pull the trigger.
It also doesn’t help that there have been constant reports that 11 wants to play in Indy for Frank Reich and John DeFilippo. That could be shifting the power in any negotiations in the Colts’ favor slightly. It’s easier to play poker when you know what the other players are holding in their hands right? Continue to be patient Eagles fans. This is a long way from being over.
