Stacking Philadelphia Eagles QB Jalen Hurts against 2021’s best prospects
By Ben Swanger
Justin Fields might just be the future of the Philadelphia Eagles franchise.
The Ohio State University could be on the brink of producing its first elite NFL talent at quarterback and the Philadelphia Eagles should be intrigued. Justin Fields possesses everything NFL teams are looking for in a franchise quarterback, but just like every player aforementioned, he is not without his knocks.
Since Fields’ college recruitment he has always been considered one of those quarterbacks who will impress at every level. In 2019 and 2020, Fields cruised through Big Ten play leading Ohio State to back-to-back College Football Playoff appearances but failed to bring home the big trophy.
Fields has the maturity and confidence to step into any NFL locker room and lead men. He has the most fluid throwing motion among prospects in this year’s draft as his deep passes are poetry in motion. Fields’ ability to throw on the run is eye-popping and his legs, like Hurts, are surprisingly lively.
Fields has one fatal flaw, but with quality development, he should be able to shake it. When watching Fields, he manufactures plays that infuriate coaches. Like Wentz, Fields has trouble when the pocket is about to collapse. Fields either inexcusably takes sacks, or he forces balls downfield for no reason when the play is clearly over.
Fields’ struggles align with Wentz’s struggles and it is sure to infuriate Eagles fans if he displays those flaws in midnight green should he be the Eagles pick, but if Nick Sirianni was hired as a quarterback developer, there should no doubt that Fields will kick that habit and maximize his potential in Philly as an elite quarterback.
Fields is the most likely pick for the Eagles should Philly consider replacing Jalen Hurts, but even sitting at sixth in the draft order, it might take a trade to snag the likes of Fields.
