The Philadelphia Eagles get some help at the linebacker position.

Former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz had a rather interesting approach to the linebacker position. Instead of balancing out the front seven, he opted to put a heavy emphasis on the defensive line while virtually ignoring the linebacker position.

Now that he’s gone, the Eagles find themselves with a serious linebacker deficiency. Alex Singleton was one of the only bright spots last season, but there is still a lack of talent at the position. To remedy this issue, the team targets an SEC linebacker in this mock draft.

The linebacker position is slowly evolving from a position of hard-nosed tacklers to one of the athletic freaks who can play sideline to sideline. Jamin Davis fits this new prototype of the NFL linebacker. Blessed with impressive speed, he’s a rangy prospect who’s best off being a weak-side linebacker.

This works perfectly for the Philadelphia Eagles as they just tendered Alex Singleton. Davis could be a great complementary piece next to two hard-nosed tacklers in Singleton and T.J. Edwards. At the very least, Davis will be a phenomenal special teams player early in his career. It never hurts to have another one of those.

Because he’s a little unseasoned, it might take a few years for Jamin Davis to hit his stride in the NFL. It’s worth the wait for the Eagles though, especially given their lack of linebacker depth. If Davis can reach his ceiling, he’ll be an outstanding starting linebacker for the team.
