The NFL’s new league year begins on March 17th, as will the first day of free agency. That’s a thought that hasn’t been lost on the minds of Philadelphia Eagles fans, and at the time of this story being published, we’re all a little under eight days out.

We’ve discussed the new contracts of players both in-house and all over the league, but they can’t be signed until the new league year arrives. Everyone has theories about who the Birds might keep and say goodbye to. We’ll all see which of those theories are right in about a week. We’ve also all learned the fates of two now-former Birds as, on March 9th, news broke from the NovaCare Complex.

The fates of two Philadelphia Eagles have already been decided.

According to Chris McPherson and the Philadelphia Eagles official team website, Philadelphia is parting ways with safety Blake Countess and defensive tackle Treyvon Hester, both of whom signed future deals shortly after the 2020-2021 season reached its conclusion.

Countess has already seen three teams in his five-year career. He spent three seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and another with the New York Jets before spending last season with Philly. He appeared in two games for the Birds and notched three tackles.

Treyvon Hester was a seventh-round selection of what was then the Oakland Raiders in 2017. He’s seen five different rosters during his NFL career, including two stints with Philadelphia. The first came in 2018 when he appeared in 12 games with one start, adding 13 total tackles and a sack to the Birds’ cause.

He was most recently on Philly’s roster this past season. He signed with the team’s practice squad on November 9th but wouldn’t appear in any regular-season games this go-around. With both, his and Countess’ departures, the Eagles have five safeties and six defensive tackles on the roster.

The safeties are Marcus Epps, Rudy Ford, Rodney McLeod, Jalen Mills, and K’Von Wallace. The defensive tackles are Fletcher Cox, Javon Hargrave, Malik Jackson, TY McGill, Hassan Ridgeway, and Raequan Williams. We’ll have to wait and see what the fallout is with much of the rest of the roster in the coming days.
