Philadelphia Eagles draft watch: Washington DB Elijah Molden
The National Football League has been trending in a different direction on the defensive side of the ball. Teams are looking for those ‘positionless players’. Think about the way the Arizona Cardinals use Budda Baker if you need an example. It seems like every year, teams are searching for a versatile defensive back to use as a freelance weapon. This year the Philadelphia Eagles should be looking to do the same thing.
Former University of Washington defensive back Elijah Molden is the perfect prototype for today’s NFL. A true defensive terror, the former Husky has the ability to be used in a multitude of ways. He’s a monster in zone coverage, but he can also be kicked outside and take away the opposing team’s best wideout, which is something the Philadelphia Eagles are in dire need of in their defense.
Understandably, the five-foot-ten 190-pound defender won’t turn any heads with his size, but when you put on his tape, it’s a different story. A true sideline-to-sideline threat, Molden possesses the football IQ to be a difference-maker anywhere on the field. A safety by trait, he has the ability to play down in the box and attack the run. He can also be kicked back into coverage as a single high safety as the last line of defense.
The Philadelphia Eagles could use a rising star like Elijah Molden.
Philadelphia needs a game-changer on the backend of their defense. Competition in the NFC East is tough enough without one, so if the Birds are going to find themselves back on top of their division, landing a potential star like Molden could go a long way in making that happen.
The 2020 NFL Season was tough on Philadelphia Eagles fans, so kicking the 2021 season off with a solid free-agent period and a great draft could be the needed medicine to get the Birds back to being a championship contender. Adding Elijah Molden to help their defense could be the right move. He’s a true leader and a talented prospect that could be a great investment for years to come.
