Update: The Philadelphia Eagles miss out on one of their top choices.

First things first. If Philly doesn’t move quickly on Jacoby Brissett, he won’t be available much longer, and the Birds still have some fat to trim from that cap number. Here’s the other thing. This young man might cost Philly more than they want to pay. It’s free agency, and teams expect to overpay though. In the meantime, there’s another statement to consider.

With guys like Ryan Fitzpatrick and Cam Newton off of the board and with Philip Rivers retired, Brissett might be the most attractive quarterback on the market. Not only is he going to get a nice salary, but Brissett might also get a chance to compete for a starting role somewhere.

Come on. He can’t win the job in some of these cities that need a signal-caller?

Let’s keep this short and sweet. Brissett has proven he can win in this league. He’s 49-32 for his career as a starter. He may not be able to match Dak Prescott throw-for-throw in a divisional game if something happens to Jalen Hurts, but we know he can win if he’s asked to come in for a stretch.

Again, that’s the most important quality in a backup, and if there’s no market for Jacoby Brissett to go somewhere and start, this might be the best option Philly will see in terms of free agents that are available to add to their quarterback room. No disrespect is intended to Alex Smith.

Update: Again, at about two hours after this story’s publishing, Brissett reached a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins.
