At the time of this story being published, three full days will have passed since the Philadelphia Eagles, or shall we say their vice president and general manager, Howie Roseman, traded back in the NFL Draft, swapped two picks with the Miami Dolphins, and landed a first-rounder from Miami for 2022’s selection meeting.

As you might expect and as is customary with this Eagles fan base, everyone has their opinion on whether it was the right move or not. Sure, if four quarterbacks are taken in the first round’s first four picks, a scenario some see as being very possible, the Philadelphia Eagles could have had their shot at quite a few guys who are seen as being the best player at their position. Moving back means they probably miss out on guys like Ja’Marr Chase and Kyle Pitts.

Here’s something else to think about though, and everyone on the other side of the argument will like this. Thanks to that conditional second-round selection that the Eagles have in their back pocket after trading Carson Wentz, landing the first-rounder in 2022 from the Dolphins means the Eagles could have three first-rounders next year. That’s great news, but what if there was some possibility that Howie Roseman and the Birds weren’t done though? It kind of feels like they’re up to something, doesn’t it?

What if the Philadelphia Eagles trade back into Round 1?

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we took it there. Let’s be frank about a couple of things. Number one, there have been no stories stating that the Eagles are even considering trading back into Round 1. Number two, the arguments for and against doing so are both compelling.

Then again, you also have to consider this. You’ve been a Birds fan long enough to know that Howie Roseman sees draft picks as collateral. Currently, the Eagles have 11, but one of the less talked about stories that came out of their March 26th trade is this.

Philly didn’t have a fourth-round selection until they struck that deal with the Fins. Now, they sit very comfortably in the selection meeting’s fourth stanza at 123. It’s the second-rounder that’s really intriguing though. Might they use that to help them trade back into the first round?

Give this some thought if you’re a Philadelphia Eagles fan.

Let’s do some inventory. Once you get past Round 2, the Eagles have two third-rounders, that fourth, a selection in Round 5, three selections in Round 6, and two more in Round 7. Philly could very well trade back into Round 1 and use some of those picks in the later rounds as more collateral to earn a few more picks of their own.

There’s no reason to think that Roseman is going to sit idly and just wait on his turn to fill out a draft card whenever the Birds are back on the clock.

The 37th selection is very intriguing as it’s right at the top of Round 2. Teams picking at the end of Round 1 might be willing to trade back. It doesn’t sound like it should be a steep drop, but often, it is. Often, the prospects in the second round give you a little less punch than the first-rounders.

Trading back into Round 1 makes a lot of sense if that’s something that the Birds are considering. Philly has a ton of holes, but they need difference-makers too. They’re potentially looking at three first-round picks in 2022.

Don’t be shocked if Howie barters the 37th-overall selection in 2021 to get back into the first round and give Philly two future stars on the draft’s first night this year. Again, let’s not act like this is contrary to his personality.
