Philadelphia Eagles, seven-round mock draft: Picking 12th
By Hunter Doyle
Jonathan Gannon gets another piece on this Philadelphia Eagles defense.
As Kyle Crabbs from The Draft Network pointed out in his scouting report, Indiana safety Jamar Johnson is best suited for a primarily split-safety defense in the NFL.
Gannon is expected to run a lot of Cover 2 in his first season as a defensive coordinator, and if Johnson is still on the board at 84, the Philadelphia Eagles should address the defense yet again and groom both he and K’Von Wallace behind the veterans: Anthony Harris, Rodney McLeod, and Andrew Adams.
Johnson was a ball hawk during his time as a Hoosier finishing with seven interceptions in 24 games. Similar to Georgia safety Richard LeCounte, while he might not be the most athletic prospect, he is instinctive and intelligent.
What gives him an edge over LeCounte is that he has the better size for the position at six-foot-one and197-pounds. He has a competitive edge that resembles that of Malcolm Jenkins.
Speaking of which, Crabbs also pointed out that Johnson can play the slot if need be like Jenkins did so often during his time in Philly. Gannon will certainly ask his safeties to do this in 2021 and it helps to have Johnson, someone who can easily translate that skill into this defense.
