A pre-draft letter to Philadelphia Eagles GM Howie Roseman

With the draft just a few hours away from the time of publication, emotions are high for Philadelphia Eagles fans everywhere. Each and every year, we fans love to be the general manager of the Eagles. We study film on prospects, meticulously develop our mock drafts, and sometimes, it seems like we do a better job than Howie Roseman himself.

The fact of the matter is that there is only one general manager of this team. Love him or hate him (and for most of you it’s the latter), he will be the primary voice in the draft room. Let’s just hope he can nail the draft this year. Here’s a letter that hopefully motivates him to do so.

Dear Howie Roseman,

What a rollercoaster you’ve gone through as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles organization. You’ve worked hard and climbed through the ranks; there’s no denying that much. What started as an internship ended with a Lombardi Trophy. It’s a storybook ending, right?

Wrong.

The events that occurred after that incredible 2017 season broke apart the team just as fast as it had been put together. The best young quarterback in football at one point in time could only be traded for a third and a conditional second-round pick. The head coach that turned a backup quarterback into a Super Bowl MVP only lasted three seasons after winning a championship.

But Howie, you’re still here. You’re the piece of gum on the bottom of every Eagles fan’s shoe. No matter how hard we scrape, we simply can’t get you off.

Your rise and fall as a Philadelphia Eagles member have been riveting.

You went from being one of the most loved men in Philadelphia to one of the most hated. Philadelphians can’t even mutter the name ‘Howie’ in a crowd without evoking an uproar. It may take a few years to swing this franchise around, but you can start by acing this 2021 NFL Draft.

What most Eagles fans won’t like to admit is that the team has had a superb offseason with all things considered. The coaching staff, while young, offers a tremendous amount of upside, and the free agency signings were low-risk and effective. The Birds also potentially have three first-round picks in next year’s draft. The rebuild is off to a solid start.

But now comes the draft. Oh, the draft. You’ve never seemed to get this one right. Remember the Marcus Smith pick? How about JJ Arcega-Whiteside? Aren’t the Eagles a ‘quarterback factory’? The list goes on and on.

It’s clear that your tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles will continue to go ‘on and on’ as well. Jeffrey Lurie has made it obvious that he wants you to spearhead this rebuild. Fans have evidently had an issue swallowing that pill, but this draft can start to turn it around for the organization.

Howie, Eagles fans have not had much to cheer about over these past few years. You helped deliver an iconic moment in each of our lives but with every passing day, that feeling of being world champions fades.

In his Super Bowl parade speech, Jason Kelce called you an ‘underdog’ when you were handed the power to this organization. With such little support behind you, it appears as if you’re once again the underdog. Find that fight inside of you and deliver on draft night. The Philadelphia Eagles fanbase is begging you to do so.
