Two underdogs complicate Philadelphia Eagles running back competition

Heading into the final game of the 2021 preseason three-game slate, the Philadelphia Eagles have six running backs on the current preseason roster. They figure to carry four into the regular season on the 53-man version.

Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and Kenneth Gainwell have jobs and are probably locks. That means Jordan Howard, Jason Huntley, and Elijah Holyfield are competing for the final place on the four-man depth chart.

Many think the job will go to Howard, and that may be a safe theory. Versus the Pats, Holyfield and Huntley will get extended looks versus the Jets in the preseason finale. Huntley is known for his speed, but he hasn’t gotten many opportunities to show it off. Holyfield earned some carries in the second game, and that felt like the first time we’ve seen him do that since he played for the Georgia Bulldogs.

Still, in any case, Huntley and Holyfield will both shine in this one. Expect both to eclipse 50 yards and fall just short of the century mark. That will add some intrigue to the conversation about that fourth and final roster spot, but it’s looking like that slot may be given to Howard. Only the Eagles know why that’s the case.

Howard can’t burn. He plays like he’s ten years older than he is, but for whatever reason, this team’s leadership structure is in love with him.
