Philadelphia Eagles: Arguments against drafting another QB in Round 1
The Philadelphia Eagles have to develop homegrown talent.
The Philadelphia Eagles, since parting ways with Andy Reid, have forgotten two of the things that made them one of the NFL’s premier franchises for a decade and a half. They’ve forgotten about consistency and building a foundation.
Nick Sirianni, as you know, is the third team that this coach has hired since Reid was relieved of his duties ahead of the 2013 NFL season. The guy running the show now, Sirianni, could also, very well, be the worst of the last three hires.
One thing that Chip Kelly, Doug Pederson, and Sirianni have all failed to do is develop their young and homegrown players. There’s no way that all of these guys can be this bad. What’s the issue?
Some of this failure to coach these guys up is a result of the fact that the coaches aren’t being held accountable. Look no further than the pathetic job that Aaron Moorehead has done as this team’s wide receivers coach.
Veterans have regressed under his watch, and the young guys at the wide receiver position don’t seem to be reaching their potential. That isn’t just an issue in the wide receivers’ meeting room though.
Ever since Doug Pederson’s tenure, this team has drafted players and failed to develop them. Then, to make matters worse, they’ve gone out and spent tons of dollars in aging free agents… And you wonder why the injuries have piled up over the past few seasons.
What’s that got to do with Hurts? It’s simple actually. Most of the struggles you’ve seen from Jalen Hurts aren’t signs of bad quarterback play. They’re a result of bad coaching, and even if the Eagles took another quarterback in Round 1 of the NFL Draft next season, as long as everything else stays the same, nothing is going to change.
