Philadelphia Eagles: Arguments against drafting another QB in Round 1
The Philadelphia Eagles’ biggest issues have nothing to do with Jalen Hurts.
Football was played for many years before most of us were born, and when we’re gone, football will continue. There are certain aspects of this game that have never changed.
Teams must run the ball to jumpstart their play-action passing game. The screen pass is utilized to take advantage of over-aggressive defenses and blitz. There must be some near-even balance of running plays and passing plays to keep the opposing defenses guessing about what your offense is up to. Better performing players are the ones who should be on the field.
None of that has been done with any consistency with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. Jalen Hurts can’t be blamed for any of that.
The Philadelphia Eagles never run the ball, and at this point, they aren’t cohesive enough on offense to drop back and throw the ball as many times as they do. The coaches aren’t helping their quarterback or the Eagles offense by adjusting their play-calling though.
Ladies and gentlemen, that isn’t a Jalen Hurts issue. That’s a coaching issue.
Let’s talk about those screen passes. Those are called all of the time, whether opposing defenses are blitzing or not, and often, that’s led to minimal results.
As if all of that isn’t bad enough, here’s something else, the Eagles’ brass is more concerned about being right than being good, so Zach Ertz and Jalen Reagor spend a ton of time on the field when Philly should be playing Dallas Goedert and Quez Watkins more.
Taking another quarterback won’t fix that. At best, you’ll see a new guy under center with the same problems. The Eagles have a ton of issues on both sides of the ball, but Hurts is far from being one of their biggest concerns.
Ladies and gents, until those concerns are taken care of, it won’t matter who they trot out onto the field. Hopefully, that sinks in sooner rather than later with this team’s brass. Until it does, Philly’s headed towards more frustration.
