Philadelphia Eagles potential trade partner: Green Bay Packers

Gather around youngsters. Here’s a story. Once upon a time, there lived one of the greatest players in NFL history, a defensive lineman by the name of Reggie White. He played for eight seasons in a Philadelphia Eagles jersey before the team’s general manager at the time, the evil Norman Braman allowed him to walk away and sign with the Green Bay Packers?

That was the dawn of free agency, right around 1993. Braman refused to play the free-agency game in those days, so when players became eligible to get their coins, they just left.

What if history repeated itself, almost 30 years later, and the Eagles lost another of the greatest players in team history to trade one shade of green for another?

Well, technically, history isn’t repeating itself here. White was a free agent and chose to go play in Wisconsin. Cox would obviously have to be traded. One also has to take into account the fact that Reggie White had plenty of tread left on the tire while Cox is clearly regressing.

Still, for a Packers team that could use a little more defensive punch to assist their outstanding offense, Cox’s addition to a defensive line that already features Dean Lowry, Kenny Clark, and Kingsley Keke makes sense as he’d be a solid veteran presence.

The Packers also employ a 3-4 scheme on defense, so that obviously means Cox would have to get used to that again. Green Bay has an estimated $30.1 million in cap space though. They’re the team in need of Cox’s services that could take on his contract with little stress.
