We still don’t know if Jalen Hurts should lead the Philadelphia Eagles next season.

After seven weeks of the 2021 NFL season, we’ve seen Jalen Hurts start 11 games as at the quarterback position. During his first two seasons in the NFL, he’s thrown 390 passes, completing 225 of them. That’s a 57.7-percent completion percentage for your math whizzes out there. He’s thrown 16 touchdown passes versus eight interceptions.

You’d like to see a 3-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio, but hey what are you going to do?

In addition to what he’s done as a passer, we also know that Hurts is a talented scrambler as well. He’s picked up another 715 yards and eight touchdowns on 129 carries.

Still, with all of that being said, he’s had two different head coaches in his first two seasons. He’s had two different offensive coordinators, and let’s be frank, Philly’s leadership, both on the field and off, has been abhorrent.

Sure, he underthrows guys and puts the ball behind them when it should be put out front. Sure, he’s had weapons, but bad playcalling has normally put them in bad positions. Do you think it’s a coincidence that Zach Ertz left and immediately looked like he can play again after he suited up for a new team with a better offense?

Excuses shouldn’t be made for Jalen Hurts. He’s been inconsistent, but here’s some bad news. The goal was to allow him a 17-game audition to determine if he should be Philadelphia’s quarterback moving forward. With the way that this team has been coached and with the way his development has been handled, we won’t be any better at determining how close he is to becoming a franchise quarterback at the end of this season than we are right now.
