Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Eric Wilson

Regardless of what happens with Eric Wilson after this season, his career in the NFL is already a success story. After going undrafted in 2017, he found his way to the Minnesota Vikings as a rookie free agent in May of that year. He went on to earn his spot in the lineup, eventually starting 15 of 16 regular-season games in 2020.

Minnesota elected to move on during the following offseason, and the Philadelphia Eagles signed him to a one-year deal worth $2.75 million. Yes, you read that correctly. Wilson got a larger deal than Kerrigan got, and though his production has actually been better than that of Philly’s former rival/new defensive end (it couldn’t possibly be worse), Wilson’s tenure in midnight green has to be seen as a failure.

109 defensive snaps over the course of the first two weeks of the season, versus the Falcons and 49ers, led to 18 total tackles and a forced fumble. He played 97 snaps over the course of the next two games versus the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs, racking up 17 tackles in the process, but it’s in the eyeball test that we see many of Wilson’s deficiencies on display.

Both Wilson and Alex Singleton missed six tackles over the course of the first month of NFL action according to Pro Football Focus. They are two of nine players league-wide that have tallied six missed tackles or more. Neither is good in coverage and as Davion Taylor has worked himself back to health, it’s Taylor, not Wilson, who seems to have the trust of his coaches.

Taylor has seen 97 snaps over the course of the past three weeks. Wilson has only seen 74. We started this by saying “regardless of what happens”, but the writing may already be on the wall for Wilson. He probably isn’t getting an extension this offseason.
