Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Teams who can partner in trade for Derek Barnett
Might the Philadelphia Eagles trade Derek Barnett at the trade deadline?
It’s been a long time since the words ‘this is a breakout season for Derek Barnett‘ held some value. The Philadelphia Eagles made him the 14th-overall selection of the 2017 NFL Draft. There have been a few memorable moments, but you can count most of the more important on one hand.
There was the sack/forced fumble versus the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship Game. That one shifted the momentum in Philly’s favor for good because, believe it or not, the game wasn’t in the bag at that point and the Vikes were driving.
It was Derek Barnett that recovered the fumble after Brandon Graham separated Tom Brady from the ball in Super Bowl LII. He even had a game-ending sack versus Andrew Luck in 2018 and a forced fumble versus Aaron Rodgers in 2019 that helped Philly win both of those games.
The problem with Derek Barnett is this. Actually, there are a few issues. As a top-15 draft choice, he hasn’t produced those moments enough. He’s more remembered for personal foul penalties that put his team in some awful positions. He’s being paid in excess of $10 million in 2021 and hasn’t proven to be worth half of that. He’s also in the final year of his rookie deal.
The Eagles have two choices. They can let him walk in the offseason and get nothing for him. They can use him as trade collateral and convince an interested party that he’s worth taking. Several NFL teams have the need for EDGE help and have the cap space to be viable trade partners with Philly if said trade were to happen.
Here are five. Might any of these teams take Barnett off of Philly’s hands as we near the trade deadline?
