Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Steven Nelson

The goal of every general manager and the team that he represents, from the owner down to the coaches, is to field the best team possible. You may not believe that’s what Howie Roseman is doing when you think about some of his roster moves, but trust us on this one. That’s the goal.

So when you think about that and when you speak about these matters in those terms, trading Steven Nelson is about as stupid an idea as anyone can come up with. Then again, on the other hand, here’s something else to think about.

Finding great wide receivers in the National Football League seems to be a much easier task these days than finding great cover guys. Even if that isn’t totally true, it just feels that way sometimes.

On the surface, it feels like the market for Steven Nelson may not be a huge one. He did spend a TON of time on the free-agent market before the Birds swooped in (pun intended) and added him to the roster on July 25th. Things have changed around the league since then though.

NFL teams are so desperate for cornerback help that they’re literally signing guys off of the street, adding them to the starting lineup, and throwing them onto the field by the following weekend. The Birds have, no doubt, gotten calls about Steven Nelson.

Yes, he’s the second-best cornerback on the Philadelphia Eagles roster. Sure, moving him and promoting anyone else that Philadelphia employs is a downgrade at the position. The Birds have some young guys they can lean on though. It’s time to see if they can play.

Depending on what the compensation is that the Birds can get from a trade, you have to believe that this is an idea that, at minimum, would require some serious thought.
