Eagles rumors: Philadelphia linked to elite quarterback post-deadline
The NFL trade deadline has come and gone. That isn’t stopping league insiders from linking an elite quarterback’s name with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Yes… Yes… We know! We know! Stories like these get on your nerves, but when certain people tell them, they’re actually worth a more detailed listen.
Rumors of Russell Wilson’s addition to the Eagles roster are being reignited.
Remember when we were hearing stories of the discontent that Russell Wilson, Deshaun Watson, and Aaron Rodgers were experiencing during the offseason? Sure, every time there’s a star in the NFL and he’s looking for a new home, they’re always somehow connected to the Birds in one way or another, but there were theories that Philly, despite having Jalen Hurts in the wheelhouse, wasn’t really married to the idea of fully throwing their supports behind the second-year man.
They had to explore their options right? After all, the quarterback position might be the most important in all of sports. The Rodgers thing seemed like an impossibility though. It just did. Philly apparently tried to explore the Watson acquisition. We’ve heard that for a while. There were other options, but even though nothing ever came of it, we all know that we weren’t hearing these rumors for no reason.
That brings us to Wilson. He’s one of the best in the business. Mike Sando of The Athletic connected the Eagles dot with that of Wilson’s about seven months ago. Reuben Frank of NBC Sports Philadelphia mentioned the possibility of a trade to land Wilson shortly before the NFL trade deadline, and now, even though the deadline has come and gone, Wilson is still being linked with Philadelphia.
Now, the people who are saying this are ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen. This one definitely isn’t ablaze yet, but there’s definitely some smoke as you can see. Schefter and Mort joined forces on a Tuesday evening episode of The Adam Schefter Podcast post-deadline. This is one you’ll want to listen to.
Schefter wasn’t beating around the bush with a very direct question:
"The Eagles could have three Top 20 first-round picks. Nobody would have more ammunition to go get a quarterback than the Philadelphia Eagles. Jalen Hurts, to date, I don’t think has convinced them that he’s the guy, right? So Russell Wilson in Philly. Can you see that, Mort?"
Here’s Mortensen’s response:
"Yes, I can, and look, I know Jalen. I hope he is the guy, but so far they’re not convinced. He has the rest of the year to try and persuade them, convince them that he is the guy. Let’s face it: you still get to the point where, hey, Russell Wilson is, we believe, a future Hall of Famer, and still in his prime. If you have that chance to get that type of player, you get that type of player… The Eagles would much rather go the veteran route than take a shot at this quarterback class. There’s some good ones, but are there going to be some great ones?"
Again, some opinions outweigh others, and these guys, whether they hit the bullseye or not, have developed a reputation for knowing what they’re talking about. This could be something. It could lead to absolutely nothing. One thing’s certain though. If Schefter and Mortensen are saying this, it’s definitely worth storing in the memory bank and revisiting later.
Don’t expect anything to transpire quickly. Again, the deadline is gone, so if anything were to occur. It would have to wait until next season.
