Possible replacements for Nick Sirianni: Todd Bowles

Current status: Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator

To some, Todd Bowles‘ ceiling has already been realized. They’d say that he’s one heck of a defensive coordinator that isn’t quite head-coaching material. Others may be inclined to state that, in the right situation with the right people around him, Bowles could thrive.

His dismantling of the high-powered Kansas City Chiefs offense in the most recent Super Bowl was masterful and, to date, his best-ever performance on any sideline, but there’s always a danger in hiring coaching retreads. If they failed before, they’ll fail again, right? Well, that isn’t always the case either.

Think of Bill Belichick and Pete Carroll. Tony Dungy and Bruce Arians are two other examples. They had decent showings the first time around but knocked the ball out of the park in their second go-around.

Todd Bowles had one winning season as the New York Jets head coach, 2015, but come on. It’s the Jets. No one wins there.

We could go back and forth about whether or not Bowles is an upgrade from Sirianni or a lateral move, but Bowles has a track record. His players love and respect him, and he has ties to the Philadelphia Eagles, having served as their secondary coach and interim defensive coordinator in 2012. It’s worth thinking about.
