Possible replacements for Nick Sirianni: Jim Caldwell

Current status: Former NFL head coach/currently retired

It’s downright pathetic that Jim Caldwell isn’t coaching somewhere right now. Look at the resume. He’s a two-time Super Bowl champion (XLI, XLVII). He owns a 62–50 record as an NFL head coach. He’s tutored Joe Flacco, Matthew Stafford, and Peyton Manning, all of which had some of their best seasons under his watch.

Caldwell took the Indianapolis Colts to a Super Bowl as a rookie head coach where they lost to the New Orleans Saints. There should be no shame in that though. Then, Flacco had his best season under Caldwell’s watch. That ended with one of the best postseason runs by a quarterback ever and Flacco winning the Super Bowl MVP trophy.

Some of Matthew Stafford’s best seasons came with Caldwell in his corner, and in three of his four seasons in Detroit, Caldwell led the Lions to winning records. He led them to the playoffs in two of those four seasons. If you can win in Detroit, you have to be doing something right.

Hey, who’s to say that this wouldn’t work? After all, recent history ought to tell you something about the Birds brand. If someone isn’t good enough for the Detroit Lions, they’re good enough for us!

We’re teasing of course as we don’t want to diminish any of Caldwell’s accomplishments in the NFL. He’s one of the great minds that the game has seen and a true quarterback whisperer. He should, no doubt, be coaching somewhere. Might the Eagles be interested? Conventional thinking says they may not be. Jeffrey Lurie doesn’t like hiring guys who have been NFL head coaches before.
