There may not be a more intriguing facet of the Philadelphia Eagles‘ workweek than what’s going on with the active roster. Who’s hurt? Who’s the next man up if key players are injured? Are the Birds in play for a star free agent that can help this team reach newer heights? The questions may change or vary slightly, but our reasons for asking them don’t.

Everyone wants wins. We can’t stop talking about the players that might deliver them. Heading into Week 10’s game versus the Denver Broncos, the Eagles roster remains a talking point.

Eagles provide updates on Slay, Maddox and elevate a well-known practice squad member.

In his Wednesday afternoon presser, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni provided updates on both Darius Slay and Avonte Maddox.

“They’re day to day. Both of them are day to day”. Week 9’s game versus the Los Angeles Chargers was a hard-fought contest, but it proved to be costly to the Eagles’ secondary. Maddox left with a knee injury but was able to return. Slay, on the other hand, left the field with a hamstring issue and was unable to return to the playing field.

It’s funny how things change from week to week. Less than seven days after learning the Chargers wouldn’t have their starting outside corners for Week 9’s game, two of Philly’s starting cornerbacks are question marks for ‘Round 10’. Hopefully, they can go, but we did get some roster news that should make Birds fans happy as well.

Jordan Howard has been signed to the active roster from the practice squad. This wasn’t a guaranteed move, but it’s one that makes sense.

After being elevated twice already from the practice squad to the active roster to appear in two games (and after sending him back down to the scout team after each contest), the Eagles didn’t have the option of using a standard elevation for the third time.

If someone had been placed on the COVID-19 list, Philadelphia could have elevated him for the third time using a COVID-19 elevation, but to make long stories short, the Eagles were in a situation where they had to move him to the active roster.

The news comes a day after the Eagles announce that they had waived cornerback Mac McCain, signed Craig James to the practice squad, and protected three practice squad players: offensive tackle Le’Raven Clark, wide receiver John Hightower, and defensive back Jared Mayden.

Howard is no stranger to the day-to-day designation. If you’ll remember, the Birds lost Howard to a shoulder injury in Week 9 of the 2019 season. Week after week, then-head coach Doug Pederson told us Howard was close to a return, but in that case, ‘day-to-day’ went on for six weeks.

He returned for the finale, but he was only in for one offensive snap. The 2020 season was his worst as a professional, and some thought he had lost a step. He’s back now though, and he looks like the Jordan Howard of old. He’s back to running the ball just as hard as he ever has. The hope is he can stay healthy.
