The Eagles don’t need reserves at safety anymore. They need starters.

Unfortunately, we found out that all of those statements about the 2018 Eagles roster (and the 2019 Eagles roster) weren’t true as injuries ripped this team apart yet again, so maybe the revolving doors on the depth chart began turning even before we originally stated.

Here’s what we can agree on though. Rodney McLeod is a great leader and player who’s on his last leg. Anthony Harris is only on a one-year deal, and he hasn’t done much to convince anyone that he should be extended.

Past those two, the Eagles have K’Von Wallace and Marcus Epps as the backups. The only other safeties that they employ are on the practice squad: Jared Mayden and Elijah Riley. That isn’t going to get the job done.

Often when we’ve talked about those annual roster issues, we’ve been fortunate enough to believe that it was only necessary to find depth at safety, that the need there wasn’t as dire as it was at other positions. That isn’t the case anymore. This team doesn’t just need reserves now. They need legitimate starters.

The Eagles need to and have to find their next franchise player at the position. Kyle Hamilton would give them one for the reasons you’ve just read (as well as a few others), so we’re planting a flag here. If Kyle Hamilton is available when Philly is on the clock, they have to take him. The only logical reason that they wouldn’t do so would have to be because Kayvon Thibodeaux has fallen into their laps.

If he does, you have to pitch your tent around him, but if he doesn’t, a very likely scenario, the next best option for Philadelphia would be Hamilton.
